Buying Fabrics, what do you do? permalink I'd love to get a discussion going about how and why you buy your fabrics. Do you prefer to shop online or in person? Do you buy for specific projects or do you buy for your stash? What size cut do you usually get? I'll start! I buy almost all of my fabric online. A trip to the local fabric shop usually involves me and my kids and I feel totally overwhelmed entertaining them and making thoughtful decisions. Online, I can shop after my kids go to bed and it's quiet. I like being able to search based on color, manufacturer, designer, etc. I like adding everything to my virtual cart without lugging bolts around. I buy from known manufacturers and I'm comfortable buying without being able to touch it first. I don't love paying shipping and waiting for the delivery... but it's a fair trade-off in my mind. I buy what I love. After doing that over the last year, I can now build projects from my stash. Yay!!! Usually I buy a half yard cut (enough for a couple of projects). Most online stores don't offer fat quarters. That's ok with me. I don't like paying a premium for that cut anyways. Usually you pay at least $2.25/fq which equals $10/yd. It's a small piece to start with and then you square it up and lose even more. Half yards work for me. The extras are always welcome to my stash. If a print will make a good binding, I will buy 1 yd. 1/2 yard for a binding plus 1/2 yard to play with. I buy 3+ yards of fabric that would make a great backing. I rarely buy quilt backing ahead of time. But come on... an aqua dot on white... on sale?! Done! I like playing with precuts too. If I see a whole line I really like together (like Dream On by the Urban Chiks) its fun and economical with precuts. I started buying charm packs (5" squares) and jelly rolls (2.5" strips) and I'm really starting to like the versatility of the layer cakes (10" squares). Fat quarter packs can be expensive. If you look around online, you can usually find a good deal. Keep in mind a lot of projects can come out of one fat quarter stack. That can be a good or bad thing depending the creator. Because I often don't have a specific project in mind when I buy fabrics (yes I'm a fabric addict) I buy fat quarters and max. 1/2 yards. Unless it's on sale and I really like it. And usually I buy a couple of fq's/half yards from the same line but never a complete line of fabric. I tend to buy mostly prints and not enough solids. I'm trying to use more of my stash this year before adding new stuff to my already full fabric cabinet.

Same is the case with me!!Even I shop online for my fabrics!!More than anything it saves my time. Browse through the list of various Fabrics manufacturers & Geotextile Fabrics .
